Glossary Terms M-N
Used in the Compression, Lamination and Transfer Molding Process

MASTERBATCH:

A preliminary mix of rubber and one or more compound ingredients for such purposes as more thorough dispersion or better processing, and which will later become part of the final compound in a subsequent mixing operation.

MELT TEMPERATURE:

The temperature of the melted material.

MILL:

A machine with two horizontal rolls revolving in opposite directions used for the mastication or mixing of rubber.

MOLD RELEASE:

A lubricant applied to the mold surface and/or compounded in the rubber to facilitate easier removal of the molded parts from the mold.

MOLD LINE:

Wherever the mold (or inserts within the mold) is split, thereby creating the possibility of rubber flow and flash during injection.

MOLD:

The enclosure which contains cavities of the products to be molded, and the means of, allowing flow of the material to the cavities. Typical construction of production molds is the hardened, thermally stable steels.

MOONEY SCORCH:

A measure of the incipient curing characteristics of a rubber compound using the Mooney viscometer.

MOONEY VISCOSITY:

A measure of the viscosity of a rubber compound determined in a Mooney shearing disc viscometer.

MONOMER:

Single molecule of rubber.

NATURAL RUBBER:

Made from (latex) juice from rubber tree.

NOZZLE:

The device used to properly mate the injection unit and mold, and to transfer the material from the former to the latter.
